Medical Offices of Dr. Gilbert R. Mason, Sr.

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Gilbert Mason, Sr. (1929- 2006) graduated from Harvard University in 1954.  He opened a family medical practice in Biloxi in 1955 and became a powerful leader of the black community.  In April 1960, Dr. Mason led a demonstration by the Biloxi Lighthouse to protest against the “whites only” beach segregation policy.  He filed and won an antidiscrimination lawsuit.  He also filed and won the first school desegregation lawsuit in Biloxi.  Dr. Mason and other noted NAACP activists formed the Council of Federated Organizations, which included the Congress of Racial Equality, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
